Race Report: Croft 22nd - 23rd July

Toyo Tires/Watchdogapp.com Jaguar Saloon & GT Championship

Rounds 9 & 10 brought the Jaguars back to the UK after the last 2 rounds at Zandvoort in Holland. Unfortunately, the proximity of the 2 races meant that many drivers had to choose which venues to race. The result being that grids at both venues were smaller than normal.

It’s around 10 years since the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club raced at this 2.1 mile circuit. It was good to the return of Thomas Butterfield, last years championship winner. Friday testing proved a challenge for some, notably Tom Robinson-XJR (water pump), Michael Holt-XJ40 (worn brake discs) & Dave Bye – XJ6 (Oil pressure). Patrick Doyle assaulted the tyre wall, snapping the front sub-frame. In true West Riding tradition, Robyn Bye collected a replacement, which was fitted overnight. Bye was unable to continue and would share the XJ40 with Nick Wade over the weekend.

Qualifying

Although the records show Cloud & Dry, the track was quite damp in qualifying. Butterfield quickly got back into the groove with a fastest lap, leading Colin Philpott’s championship leading XJS. The Adam Powderham’s Supercharged XJR annexed 3rd from Patrick Doyle’s 6 Litre XJS. Simon Blunt led Class A from Daniel Stewart. Lawrence Coppock suffered lost coolant on lap 4 after posting 6th fastest whilst Dean Sewell’s XJ6 had an alternator failure.

Race 1

Lawrence Coppock was a non-starter after his qualifying woes, leaving son Richard to uphold family honours. Butterfield slightly jumped the start & slowed so as not to gain an advantage, allowing Philpott & Doyle through before Clearvaux. Philpott pulled away to a 6 second lead before a couple of missed gear changes allowed the second placed car to catch up & pressure him for the last 4 laps. This was Butterfield who shadowed Doyle for a number of laps before the latter had a spin at the hairpin, allowing Butterfield through to take up the challenge. Despite his best efforts in a strange car (loaned from Wade), he could not get to grips with the leader. The 2 XJRs of Powderham & Robinson attempted to get on to the tail of Doyle but the power of the 6 litre XJS was too much. When developed, these supercharged cars will become a major challenge. Boon, driving in his usual clean & unflurried manner, collecte a class 2nd. An early 3-car battle between Coppock, Dean Sewell’s XJ6 & the Blunt XJS entertained the spectators, with the cars on the limit at the Complex curves. Despite soggy suspension & poor brakes, the Holt XJ40 got past Sewell & Blunt to claim class A. On lap 11 Blunt nudged Sewell under braking & spun off. Such a poor reward for Blunt after a fine drive.

Race 2

Sewell had replaced a faulty alternator overnight to line up on the grid. Lawrence Coppock was a non starter with gearbox problems, a poor reward after making the long journey north. Son Richard more than upheld family honours though. As his own car was still out of action, Nick Ward kindly lent his XJ40, having already loaned his XJS to Thomas Butterfield for the weekend.

If Saturdays race was good, then Sundays was outstanding from the start.

Doyle got a good start from the 2nd row & took Butterfield, only to cock a wheel up on the kerb at Clervaux & spin, giving the following pack cause to take evading action. Philpott led for a few corners until a moment on the grass let Butterfield into the lead. This meant the 2 fastest cars were trailing round at the back. Philpott took Doyle at the Complex & spent the race passing the whole grid with the exception of Butterfield, who held him off to win by 4 secs. Doyle clawed his way back but a couple of spins at the Complex stopped any further progress. Sewell pulled in on lap 4. Meantime the XJR twins of Robinson & Powderham (a quick spin) headed a mighty battle from Boon & Coppock, with Holt working the XJ40 to 6th behind Boon. Stewart held of the very experienced Bye, who was giving his XJ40 its all. The 2 Simons, Dunford & Blunt had a race long battle with the former crossing the line first to earn Drive of the Day.
