September news from Beds Region
As the major show season comes to an end, the Region exhibited at the annual Piston and Props event at Sywell Aerodrome near Northampton. We booked to have six cars on both the Saturday and Sunday.
As planned on the Saturday, six cars were in place by c9.30. The gazebo was erected with one panel in place to give some protection from the strong prevailing wind. Otherwise, the weather was great, dry and sunny and everyone was enjoying the show, with single seaters, specials, Le-Mans type and dragsters speeding along the runways. Two acrobatic biplanes with Wing walkers and much activity at the various stalls.
Then come around 2.30 p.m. the weather turned nasty. The wind strengthened, rain and hailstones poured down with thunder and lightning circling the aerodrome. Whilst we took shelter in the gazebo, hailstones flew in from the sides, we clung onto the frame. A couple of nearby canopies went airborne, one from the neighbouring MG Club.
Eventually things calmed down enough to dismantle the gazebo and driving around the lakes that had formed on the infield we left the site around 4.00 p.m. Certainly a day to remember.
As expected, the organisers cancelled Sunday – with tickets transferred to 2025!
Elsewhere members attended the Kop Hill Climb and enjoyed fast laps at the JEC Speed Fiesta at Castle Combe.
