March News 2025. A fascinating start to the club year.
First, Robert described the complex process of recovering and identifying bodies, often in challenging conditions, following tragic events such as plane crashes, boats sinking and catastrophic flooding. He was part of the team sent to Asia after the 2004 tsunami, which killed 1,300 people and destroyed innumerable homes and livelihoods.
Robert’s talk, while inevitably distressing, was a fascinating account of the significant contribution he made towards helping relatives of victims to find closure through the conclusive identification of their lost loved ones.
Robert then provided some welcome light relief by turning the spotlight on to his passion, the construction and maintenance of his stunning light railway, where beautiful steam and diesel locomotives pull carriages along half a mile of track which includes a tunnel, platforms, and an engine shed.
Robert kindly invited members to visit the railway during the summer, an event that everyone is now eagerly anticipating.
March was rounded off by 43 members enjoying an exclusive visit to the award-winning collection of WW1 and WW2 artefacts at the We’ll Meet Again Museum, near Boston.
Many thanks to Paul and Linda, and their team of volunteers, for illustrating the wartime experiences of military personnel and civilians, especially in the blitz, during an informative and nostalgic morning.
Afterwards, most members drove to The Red Lion at Bicker for another excellent lunch.
