Derbyshire Report for June
We had planned “Bonnets Up” for our June meeting but as over three quarters of the Committee were away, we decided to cancel, so apologies to all and we will reschedule over the next couple of months.
There were a few new members at the last meeting, so welcome to you all and we hope to see you at our meetings/events during the rest of the year. Those joining us over the last couple of months are Jason and Nichola Knighton, Howard and Tracy Culley, Andrew and Helen Fox, Mark and Dawn Wells and Dave Ashley.
Apart from the Monthly Meeting we had a couple of outings in June, one to the IWM, Duxford and the other to Pipes in the Peaks Summer BBQ. We had 10 at Duxford and both the hotel and weather were good and Duxford didn’t disappoint. They were preparing for the first Airshow of the year on the Saturday following our visit, so we were treated to some low flying by a Spitfire and Aerobatics by a couple of planes we weren’t sure of, and some of this was from the garden of the hotel after we returned! There is lots to see at Duxford and we can certainly recommend for a regional visit.
Pipes in the Peaks BBQ is now a regular event and was again good. We had 32 attend and I think everyone enjoyed the evening, so thanks to Dave and Christian and all the others who make the event run smoothly.
Details of up-and-coming events will be emailed to everyone so check you in- box regularly!
Footnote: Main picture is a PBY Catalina Flying Boat (taken at the Region's outing to Duxford) used by the Royal Canadian Airforce and built in 1943 and is called Miss Pick Up and if you google it there is a host of information about the plane and the Preservation Society as it’s still flying. Postscript: Bicester Heritage held their 'Flywheel' event in June and the pictures below show some of the Jaguars present, plus a Bristol! Flywheel ("Fly" and "Wheel") brings together Bicester's Flying background together with the current Vehicle usage, and was a 'Family' event, rather than the usual hardcore offering for 'petrolheads' like us!
