Race 12: Oulton Park
Classic Spares/Toyo Tires Jaguar Saloon & GT Championship17 drivers entered this final round of the championship at the picturesque but challenging Oulton Park circuit in Cheshire. 2 drivers, James Ramm (XJS) & Simon Lewis (XJ6) were taking the championship down to the wire with class wins also to be settled.
Ramm needed to win his class with Lewis to finish lower than 3rd in his class. Great to see Tom Lenthall’s XJS back after an ‘off’ at Donington in August.

Qualifying
Starting at 0830 on cold tyres and a very damp track was a challenge. Conditions gave the standard cars the opportunity to qualify higher up the grid as power was a disadvantage in damp & greasy conditions. This didn’t affect Ramm as he stormed to pole position. The standard cars of Alasdair McGregor (X300), Philip Comer & Laurence Squires (XJSs) took the next 3 grid positions in a fine display. Lewis had a minor off, nudging the bank & brought out the safety car but he still managed 5th with a loose bonnet.
Race
The slight downhill slope on the grid caught Comer out as he rolled forward, earning a 10 second penalty. Ramm took off into distance to win by 21 seconds. Initially followed by McGregor, who would have brought a standard car to the podium. However this outstanding drive came to naught when, with failing brakes, he went across the chicane on lap 8 & then went off at Lodge. A poor result for a fine drive.
Battles between Roger Webster & Dean Sewell, whose XJ6 was suffering a tyre fouling the wheel arch, Ian Drage & Tom Lenthall kept the crowds entertained. A massive 5-car battle followed between Lewis, Gail Hill, Lawrence Coppock & Lenthall. This group swapped places a number of times before the flag. Hill’s drive from 16th to 3rd earned her ‘Drive of the Day’ whilst Lewis took 2nd to win the championship. Squires earned a 5-second penalty for exceeding track limits but still took the class win from Comer & Nick Wade.
