What is the Big Forum Weekend?
Open to all members this event will provide an informative and enjoyable day or weekend for members and their partners.
Held at the Mecure Hull, Grange Park Hotel, Willerby near Hull we have a series of seminars on topics such as Leathercare, Oil from Millers Oils and parts supply from SNG Barratt plus Jaguar memorabilia valuations from the leading expert Ian Cooling and Antiques from TV’s Caroline Hawley. For those that want to explore Hull we have arranged an Old Town Tour and entry to The Deep, Hulls award winning aquarium. This will be by coach from the hotel.
There will be a buffet lunch for all attendees on the Saturday and judging throughout the day for a number of trophies and prizes, sponsored by Millers Oils, including People's Choice, Furthest Travelled and even a Best Dressed Owner who closely matches their car's era! In the evening the Club will be hosting a Gala Dinner at the Mercure Grange, when the prize winners will be announced and you can enjoy a brilliant social evening. There will also be a show and shine competition - so polish up that Jaguar!
On Sunday 17th September there is an opportunity to take part in the Sunday run taking place through the lovely Yorkshire countryside. At present we are working on a special route that should not be missed, more later!
Through our travel partners, Scenic Car Tours, we have negotiated an excellent hotel rate inclusive of everything happening at the hotel so make a weekend of it, you wont regret it!
What's Going On?
Friday – 15th September
For those who book our weekend package, what better start than to arrive at a time to suit you, book in and relax for an informal welcome on the Friday evening. This will be an ideal time to socialise and meet up with friends old and new from the Jaguar community, get to know the hotel and all it offers. This is your time to relax from the week and prepare for a fabulous weekend of activities.
Saturday - 16th September
The conference rooms we have devised a programme of two streams of short seminars both of which have a ‘Collectibles’ theme. In the General Collectibles stream we are delighted to welcome local antiques expert and celebrity antiques personality Caroline Hawley, from television shows such as Flog It, Bargain Hunt and The Antiques Road Trip. Caroline started dealing in antiques and collectables as a teenager, before setting up shops near her home in East Yorkshire. After many successful years dealing, she moved into auctions and now buys and sells both sides of the English Channel. Caroline’s specialisms include costume and textiles, French antiques, c19th porcelain and pottery. Caroline will be giving a presentation on these and other collectibles after which she will be available to talk to and provide valuations ‘Antiques Roadshow’ style, so we want as many of you as possible to bring an item along for Caroline to view.
In the other Automobilia Stream the collectibles theme is picked up in a Jaguar context as our expert on the subject will be Ian Cooling, similarly presenting a talk on collectibles within the Jaguar world and afterwards inviting you to bring your items to him for review and value.
Around these presentations are built the two parallel streams with Keynote Presentations provided by our headline weekend sponsors, Millers Oils and SNG Barratt.
Millers Oils will be talking about oil and its importance in the healthy running of both modern and classic engines. They will cover aspects of performance and making sure that your car is ready for the winter (it will be September by then
after all). To make their presentation even more interesting they will be undertaking a demonstration of how the quality and age of your oil impacts performance and emissions, with a live oil change and emission test of two cars, demonstrating the issues that result from use of the wrong grade of oil, or oil ageing.
SNG Barratt’s presentation will feature the latest developments in Jaguar spare parts, discuss availability (or lack of it), and what we are jointly doing to tackle these issues. Plus other matters again focussing on jobs for the winter.
There will be the opportunity to ask questions at the end of each and every seminar session. Our Club’s technical expert Ken Jenkins will be on hand to answer your questions throughout the day, along with Mike Horlor and Rob Jenner.
In addition to their seminars, both Millers Oils and SNG Barratt will have their demonstration sales vehicles in attendance for the weekend, providing the opportunity to buy products as needed at special Club discounts. You will also be able to order items in advance for collection on the day of the event.
As well as the headline sponsors we will have a demonstration of Leather Repair and Care Techniques, always very popular with our audience and we are in the process of finalising another key presentation on an aspect of maintaining our Jaguars, which we will be able to announce next month.
In all, each stream will have FIVE presentations, most of which will be repeated twice giving you the ability to make your own choices throughout the day which should enable you to participate in everything you find of interest.
There will of course be other activities
on offer which will include the following:
● JEC Forum based displays of cars.
● Bring & Buy sale (bring your redundant motoring items to our Saturday bring and buy sale and make some cash!)
● The Forum ‘Face Off’ – a show and shine event where all those who want to, can enter their cars to be judged on merit on the day. The winner from each Forum will go forward to the ‘4 o’clock Face Off, where a panel of invited judges will choose the top three cars and the Car of the Day.
The Bring & Buy Sale will be in one of the indoor rooms and will be manned and administered by an experienced member of the Club’s events team. Your item(s) should be priced clearly, the Club just taking an admin fee of 10% for administration of the sale. Items for the sale will be restricted to those that are relatively easy to carry, must clean, and entry for your items will be free with either the Weekend Ticket or the Day Ticket.
Outside, apart from the Forum displays and the Miller’s and Barratt’s stands we will be inviting other trade and autojumble stands, so if you have lots of items you want to dispose of this might be more suitable for you. The Club’s Prize Draw car and Gift Shop will also be in attendance.
This is a good point at which to talk about things for our partners. Conscious that the above will not instantly appeal to our better halves, we have organised the following tours and activities to give them the opportunity to explore the delights of Hull. These will include:
A Walking Tour of Hull Old Town – Taken into the centre of Hull by luxury coach, a specialist guide to Hull to take you on a private tour of the old town, in itself a fascinating place to visit steeped in history. The tour takes about an hour to an hour and a half, with the opportunity afterwards to take refreshment in a local historic bar.
Visit The Deep (aquarium) - The Deep, one of the most spectacular aquariums in the world, is located in Hull. This award winning attraction is home to 3,500 fish including magnificent sharks and rays. The dramatic building, which overlooks
the Humber estuary, was designed by world class architects, Sir Terry Farrell and Partners and opened in 2002. Travel by coach and enjoy a special group visit and they have café/restaurant facilities as well.
The Mercure Spa – Hotel residents will benefit from a special discount on all treatments, access to the pool and facilities will be free to Club member residents and their guests. Remember we have the whole hotel to ourselves over this weekend!
NB - A coach will be arranged to take our guests to the off-site attractions above – there will be a small extra charge for the Tour or The Deep, to include the admission and the coach. We are also working with other local attractions and will make further announcements of more things you will be able to enjoy, next month.
Onward to Saturday Evening
We have a Gala Dinner at the hotel arranged for the Saturday night, a 3 course meal followed by entertainment provided by a live local band, so there will be plenty of opportunity for dancing if you wish, all of which will be hosted in the newly refurbished spectacular International Suite. Entertainment during dinner will be provided by two Table Magicians who will astound us with their tricks whilst we slurp our soup!
Preceding the Gala Dinner will be our Prize Giving – and for this event we have SEVEN special prizes to be awarded:
The Longest Distance Travelled to attend the Event.
The People’s Choice Award, your favourite car of the day as voted for by you and your guests.
The Forum model with the highest documented mileage.
Dressage – the individual or couple dressing to co-ordinate with their car, either by choice of colour or by era of manufacture(or both!).
The Forum Face-Off - Car of the Day and Runner Up.
The Best Modified Jaguar – the best nonstandard Jaguar as seen on the day.
Please note that Seminars and Dinner will be bookable in advance through Scenic Car Tours only. Options are available for the weekend, Saturday only or just the dinner, to suit personal arrangements. However, booking for the dinner will close on 1st September to enable numbers and meal choices to be communicated to the hotel.
Now on to describing the Sunday fun. After a leisurely breakfast there will be a further opportunity for anyone who missed out on Saturday to visit the Old Town by coach. We are also hoping to organise a very special photo opportunity – more on this next time. There will also be the opportunity to use remaining time to visit many of the other attractions in the area like Fort Paull, local galleries, museums, country houses or even the Spurn Point Nature Reserve.
If you want to enjoy even more before you return home, why not take our planned run around the Yorkshire Wolds amidst beautiful countryside, on excellent roads, finishing at a new and fantastic motoring themed café/ restaurant very close to the M62 motorway, to take in a final coffee/cake break or even a full afternoon tea. This will leave you ideally placed for your return journey home.
