Jaguar Super Saturday is held at the Coventry Transport Museum and attracts Jaguars from all over to their spiritual home of Coventry.
Organiser Malcolm Humphries spoke this year’s Jaguar Super Saturday and provided us with an insight into this event which celebrated its fifth year and attracted around 90 Jaguars. Malcolm said “Blessed with fine weather, and with just under 90 vehicles attending in a display that spanned 92 years of Jaguar heritage, this was our biggest and most successful event yet – by some margin!”
Malcolm continued: “We were delighted to have Norman Dewis OBE as our VIP guest and I am sure this brought many extra visitors along on the day to meet this legend of Jaguar history who for 33 years helped shape and refine many of the iconic Jaguar models during his time as Jaguar Chief Test Engineer. JSS is now well established and is actually the largest outdoor motoring event that takes place at the terrific Coventry Transport Museum” (which also houses a display section from The Jaguar Heritage collection)
Each year, the Timeline Section of the show aims to illustrate a history of just some of the rich history of models across the years. This year it began with a 1925 Brough Motorcycle and Swallow Sidecar – enthusiasts will appreciate this harks right back to the very early days in the career of Jaguar’s founder Sir William Lyons who as a young man rode just such a bike, and of course was in a partnership in The Swallow Sidecar Company back in the early 1920’s in Blackpool.
The display went on to feature a couple of Swallow-bodied cars – one based on the Austin 7 chassis (1930) and the other on the Wolseley Hornet chassis (1931). Some sumptuous SS models from the 1930’ followed on and led to many significant Jaguar and Daimler models over the decades and right up to the present-day supercar, executive and SUV offerings.
Norman had kindly donated one of his Biography’s to the charity draw – this proved irresistible as a collector’s item and was personally signed and presented by Norman to the lucky winner in front of ‘77RW’ the world famous E-Type roadster that Norman drove overnight in a rush to get it to day 2 of the Geneva Motor Show launch back in 1961 – where of course the stunning new model was a huge hit!
There were a number of cars with notable history on display, and these included the 1937 MK IV that was owned by Arthur Whittaker (an influential Director at Jaguar), and also ‘HDU 555N’the last of line E-Type roadster from 1974.
Each year JSS supports a charity and it was once again The Air Ambulance Service this time – a tremendous sum of £1,700 (smashing previous records!) was raised thanks to the kind generosity of all the drivers at the show.
Malcolm has announced that JSS 2018 is planned to take place on 30/06/18 and details of how to apply for a display place will appear on the museum website from late February.
