The first time Jaguar had produced a small saloon to cater for a younger and much wider audience, the X-type was also a two-edged sword catering for those who wanted a less expensive Jaguar and those who wanted to downsize from a larger model.
With the benefit of Ford ownership Jaguar needed to widen its appeal in a similar manner to BMW with a whole range of saloons to suit different markets and age groups. The X-type built on that with the benefit of the Ford parts bin for many items, yet retained typical Jaguar styling and interior ambience.
Initially launched in 2001 as a 2.5 litre and 3.0 litre V6 petrol engined models (using the same engines as the S-type), the X-types benefitted from all wheel drive, another first for the company. Later additional engines included front wheel drive 2.0 litre petrol in 2002, 2,0 litre diesel in 2003, plus a 2.2 litre diesel in 2005, the latter with a 6-speed manual transmission. Launched as a four door four-seater saloon, in 2004 an estate version widened the appeal further as the first such production vehicle produced by Jaguar. Special editions were produced throughout the period and the models only went out of production in 2008, not to be replaced until the introduction of the XE in 2015.

Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club Insurance is designed specifically for members of the JEC. That’s why it covers JEC TrackSport events and offers cover for JEC Young Enthusiasts.
