Ian Callum’s design consultancy has unveiled on their Instagram feed the first glimpse of an intriguing reimagining of one of Jaguar’s greatest supercars, the XJ220.
Only a side-profile image has been released so far, but it reveals a striking reinterpretation of the iconic shape. While unmistakably inspired by the original, the new design adopts a sharper, more contemporary appearance, with more pronounced rear haunches and a steeper, more aggressive tail. Despite the modernisation, several hallmark XJ220 styling cues remain, including the distinctive oval side windows and the signature air intakes running along the flanks.
Callum Design describes the project as a “concept” and a “design study”, stressing that there are currently no plans to put the car into production. However, the company says the exercise demonstrates what is possible through its bespoke design and engineering services, leaving the door open for a sufficiently committed client to commission their own interpretation.
A full unveiling is expected in the coming months. The timing is particularly significant, with October marking 35 years since the production Jaguar XJ220 made its world debut at the 1991 Tokyo Motor Show, providing an ideal opportunity to celebrate one of Jaguar’s most iconic road cars.
Ian Callum, Jaguar’s Director of Design between 1999 and 2019, has developed a reputation for reimagining automotive icons through his independent consultancy. Previous projects have included the Wood & Pickett Mini, a modernised Aston Martin Vanquish—one of his own original designs—and the creation of a road-legal version of Jaguar’s spectacular C-X75 concept. Intended as the spiritual successor to the XJ220, the C-X75 was conceived during Callum’s time at Jaguar but never reached production, making this latest project another fascinating chapter in his continuing relationship with the marque’s most celebrated performance cars.
