JLR has announced a significant reshaping of its senior leadership team as the company strengthens its focus on the UK, Defender and North America, while separately beginning a workforce programme expected to result in up to 300 employees leaving the business.
Cian O’Brien has been appointed Managing Director of JLR UK, succeeding Patrick McGillycuddy, who will move into the global role of Managing Director, Defender.
McGillycuddy succeeds Mark Cameron, who has been appointed CEO of JLR North America. Cameron’s position is a newly created role intended to reflect the strategic importance of North America and JLR’s ambition to accelerate growth in one of its most significant global markets.
JLR announced the appointments on 29 July as part of its Growth, Reimagined ambitions and the continuing execution of its Reimagine strategy. The company said the changes would support growth across its House of Brands, strengthen its focus on North America and build further momentum in its home market.
New leadership for JLR UK
Cian O’Brien is currently Market and Business Operations Director for JLR UK and brings extensive automotive leadership experience to his new position.
Before joining JLR, he held several senior roles within Volkswagen Group, including Managing Director of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK and Chief Operating Officer of Audi of America. JLR said this had given him considerable experience in retail operations and customer-focused growth strategies.
O’Brien will lead the UK business through what JLR describes as a pivotal period. This will include the continuing launch of new Range Rover Electric products and the debut of Jaguar Type 01 later in 2026.
O’Brien said he was “honoured to succeed Patrick and build on the strong foundations he has established.”
He described the UK as a critically important market for JLR and said the arrival of new Range Rover products, alongside the continuing evolution of Jaguar, represented a defining moment for the business. He also pledged to work closely with JLR’s teams and retail partners to strengthen the UK operation and continue improving the experience offered to clients.

McGillycuddy takes global control of Defender
Patrick McGillycuddy has led JLR UK since 2023, guiding the business through what the company described as significant industry and economic headwinds.
JLR credited him with strengthening the commercial performance of its Range Rover, Defender, Discovery and Jaguar brands, enhancing the modern luxury client experience and deepening collaboration with the company’s retail partners.
His move to become global Managing Director of Defender places him in charge of one of JLR’s most important and internationally recognised brands.
Reflecting on his time leading the UK operation, McGillycuddy said it had been “a privilege to have held this role over the past three years.”
He praised the strength, resilience and commitment of teams throughout JLR and its retail network, saying their combined efforts had positioned the UK business strongly for its next phase of growth. He added that he expected the organisation to continue thriving under O’Brien’s leadership.

New North American CEO
Mark Cameron, previously the global Managing Director of Defender, has been appointed CEO of JLR North America.
Unlike the Defender position, Cameron’s North American CEO role is specifically described by JLR as newly created.
The appointment reflects JLR’s intention to give greater strategic emphasis to North America and accelerate growth in one of its most significant international markets. Cameron will be responsible for maintaining momentum behind Range Rover, Defender, Discovery and Jaguar across the region.
Up to 300 employees expected to leave
Separate from the official leadership announcement, JLR has also begun what it describes as a limited redeployment and displacement programme.
Up to 300 salaried and management employees are expected to leave the company. The changes are understood to affect office-based and management positions rather than production-line employees.
JLR has said that affected colleagues will be supported in finding alternative positions within the company wherever possible. Employees will also be offered the option of voluntary early exit.
The company said it was evolving its operating model to accelerate growth across its House of Brands and support the delivery of its next generation of vehicles. The changes are intended to improve decision-making and business performance as part of JLR’s continuing transformation.
Although the workforce programme and the leadership appointments are separate developments, together they illustrate the extent of the change taking place within JLR.
The company is preparing to introduce new Range Rover Electric products, reveal Jaguar Type 01, expand Defender’s global presence and pursue further growth in North America. At the same time, it is adjusting its internal structure and reducing the number of salaried and management positions within the UK business.
The appointments place Cian O’Brien in control of JLR’s home market, Patrick McGillycuddy at the head of Defender globally and Mark Cameron in charge of the increasingly important North American operation at a pivotal point in the company’s Reimagine strategy.
