Monthly Monday Meetings

Monday 13th May will be at The Wight Mouse Inn, Chale, PO38 2HA

The Wight Mouse Inn offers a range of high-quality foods of generous proportions and a choice of traditional beers. The pub is well known for its pleasant atmosphere and friendly staff. The Wight Mouse Inn and Clarendon Hotel was named after the shipwreck of the Clarendon which sank in Chale Bay in 1836 claiming 25 lives. Some of the timbers from the wreck were incorporated into the hotel and it was a popular destination for the upper classes in Victorian times. I am sure this makes it suitable for our members!

Monday 3rd June will be at The Chequers Inn, Rookley, PO38 3NZ

The earliest recollections of the building are that of a "Customs House" that was at one time called "The Star". In 1799 it was run by George Morris who paid 6d as a quarterly rate to the parish of Godshill. Robert Downer ran the pub in 1820 paying 2s 4d as quarterly rates. In the early 1890's Mary, became licensee and she and her sister, Bella, remained in occupation for nearly 60 years. There are a host of stories to be heard about these two extraordinary ladies who many still remember. Amazingly Whitbread brewery closed it down in 1986. Fortunately a local farming family purchased the pub and made it a success once again.
