JEC South Lincs. - March Club Meeting and "My Life in Motorsport".

Richard has enjoyed a fascinating career in motorsport. His apprenticeship with a rally car dealership encouraged him into rally driving himself until he ‘ran out of talent on a quick corner’. Rallying’s loss was to prove F1’s gain. After a spell preparing pace notes, working for Rally Sport Magazine, and test-driving rally cars, Richard joined F1 team Williams, looking after their sponsors. He was subsequently poached by McLaren, where he oversaw Alain Prost driving the ‘wrong way’ around Silverstone for a Shell advert and enjoyed Niki Lauda’s dominant 1988 season. Later, with TWR, Richard served as a director alongside Ross Brawn, celebrating wins at Daytona and Le Mans in 1990. At both circuits, the Jaguars famously ‘raced’ against fighter jets. Amazingly, given speeds of 227 mph, the Le Mans cars’ headlights afforded only 45 yards night-time visibility! Returning to Williams, Richard negotiated their sponsorship deal with Rothmans. He also interviewed Ayrton Senna at Imola, shortly before his tragic fatal crash. In 1996, Richard left Williams to work with Michael Schumacher’s sponsors. During his F1 career, Richard raised $165m in sponsorship. Since leaving F1, he has been the series boss of BTCC and now provides training in business leadership skills drawn from his motorsport experiences.
