Replacement touch screen

Postby richard-miller139 » Sat May 11, 2019 6:20 pm

I have recurrent problem with the touch screen on my 2008 XKR which goes into emergency OS mode and displays “PALMYRA” computed code. This doesn’t always happen, but it’s often enough that I really want to fix it. I’ve just replaced the battery but this didn’t cure the issue so next step is to replace the infotainment screen. These are hideously expensive new, so I’m planning to fit a used screen and wondered whether the XF screen from same model year is compatible as they seem to be 20% of the cost of XK screens. I’d be pleased to hear from anyone with experience of this. Thanks, Rich

There are 17 different part numbers for XK screens alone and a similar number for the XF range but none of the part numbers between the two car ranges is identical! Consequently, it is difficult to say whether even a second hand screen from another XK will work as a straight swap. Since screens are expensive, if you haven't already done so, it would be a good idea to have the car diagnosed by someone with either the full Jaguar dealer kit or the appropriate Autologic modules to ensure it is a screen fault and not a comms or module issue. New screen went in today and seems to have resolved the problem, although I’ll wait a few weeks before declaring victory.

So what I learnt from this experience is that screen faults are increasingly common as these cars age and whilst software reloads perhaps work for some, any amount of time spent diagnosing/repairing the fault will quickly reach the same cost as simply replacing the screen. This is a simple 30 minute job that involves unclipping dash trim, removing 6 screws to release the unit from the dash and a further 6 screws to get the screen out of its frame, then unplug 3 electrical connectors.

I found an independent JLR specialist selling brand new units on eBay for a fair price and offering free advice and/or fitting, although I fitted mine myself. Link below:

Next job is to update the firmware and navigation maps with 2014/2015 discs, which I believe are the most recent for the XK. Probably not going to try more recent Volvo discs as apparently this limits some other features.

It's good to know the issue looks like it's resolved (fingers crossed). For more up to date discs, you are correct in that the last XKs were supplied with 2013/14 dated discs. However, there is at least one company supplying 2019/20 labelled disks (www.latestsatnav.co.uk/). Note that the countries on these later disks are arranged in a different order from the originals. Otherwise, they seem to work OK. Mike.
