General Servicing

On 3 April 2018 I bought an XK (5.0 (normal aspiration). Registration date 29 March 2013.

"Jaguar Approved" with 2 Year Warranty running from my purchase. Current mileage only 5,800. 1 previous owner.

Serviced pre-purchase (23 March 2018) at 4,179 miles by selling Jaguar dealership (N. England) - "A/Oil Service). Only service since new.

Next service has been suggested by another Jaguar dealer for April 2019 ("90,000 (!!) miles/April 2019" service milestone).

Grateful for any recommended Jaguar XK experts I can contact for advice upon service plan/servicing etc. (preferably based around N. Somerset/W. Wilshire/N. Dorset area but prepared to travel reasonable distance for the right arrangement).

Any thoughts on the general question of whether to go to a Jaguar garage/main dealer rather than to an independent Jaguar specialist?

I imagine the Jaguar main dealers will, e.g., automatically carry out a full 90,000 mile service on my XK in March 2019 when it may only have then done about 9,000 miles.

I am not trying to avoid all proper maintenance and recognise some parts (consumables, hoses etc. etc.) have a replacement age whatever the mileage.

I am concerned Jaguar will say anything less than full “90,000 mile” servicing - whatever the low mileage - will restrict or void the 2-year Approved Warranty.

I see Jaguar main garages offering fixed price service contracts (e.g. by Jaguar Taunton). Any thoughts welcome.

Sorry - I missed the bit in your original message about a 2 year warranty. My initial reaction to this is that you ought to check with the supplying dealer regarding any servicing conditions attached to the warranty. Some warranties I have come across in the past (not Jaguar) are in fact dealer warranties rather than manufacturer warranties and a condition of the warranty is that the dealer does the servicing (at your cost obviously).

If there are no such conditions then my preference would be to use an independent specialist, partly because of lower hourly costs and partly because I have come to distrust main dealers' competence over the years (again, not Jaguar).

You are quite right that some service items are not mileage dependent and will require checking due to age related degradation. However, this even extends to oil changes. Most oil service schedules are based on a certain mileage OR an annual change (whichever comes first) - this is because oil can degrade over time.

Not sure I've helped much but I would certainly start by contacting the supplying dealer.

Just to update ...

After brief good help from Jaguar Taunton (“Approved” warranty replacement of faulty pedestrian impact sensor), for 12 month 90,000 service went to Dick Lovett Bath 22 March 2019 for “fixed price” service. £350 plus £65 (all incl. VAT) brake fluid change.
