Power Steering Reservoir Leak

Postby JaguarMike » Sat Feb 18, 2012 6:47 pm

Hi PJTS1 / dh dove,

woke my car up last week ('93.5MY 4.0L) just to give some movement and the power steering fluid has disappeared. I found it again soaked up in the card-board on the floor! Looks like the reservoir may have failed from the trickle on the inner wing. Is this common (I think I've heard of this before, but not sure which car-line it was)? Part no, looks like it's CAC 6853, but if I buy a "previously owned" one, will it also be prone to the same problem (an ageing split I assume as all connections are tight). Any thoughts / recommendations? I see Grublogger have some in stock.

The reservoir was also fitted to XJ40, as well, although that doesn't help greatly as new ones haven't been available for quite a while.

I fitted a second hand one some years ago and it has so far been trouble free.

It might be worth also checking the hoses (the good news is that they are still available. They do get a bit porous over time and can contribute to the problem...

This may not apply to a 4.0, but I've read that on the 5.3 the splayed metal hose ends can leak through small cracks that open when the clamping nut is tightened.

Hi Mike

Yes, this is a problem. I had to replace the reservoir and a hose on my '95 4.0 AJ16 coupe, initially I thought it was just a hose, but that didn't cure the problem. I fitted a secondhand reservoir (supplied by Swallows Jaguar) and all was well - at least until I sold the car last year.
I bought more hoses than I replaced and didn't use one, I put it "somewhere safe" ........I'll see if I can find it as it may prove useful to you.

Best Wishes

Mike

Found it!

The hose I have is CBC5357, low pressure hose from reservoir to steering rack, 3.6 V139052-179736, 4.0 V179737-226645. Cost new £12.83+VAT.

If this would help you I'm happy to let you have it FoC if you send me something to cover the p&p. Drop me a pm if you're interested.

Regards
TonyS

Thanks for the reply DH Dove and the kind offer.

I probably won't need it as I'm convinced it was the reservoir, but I'll take you up on that offer anyway. I will send you what you paid for it. Please let me have your address via Email.

Regards,

Jaguar Mike
