Can't find a condenser!!

Postby davidr » Wed Jan 14, 2015 8:49 pm

Help!! I'm trying to find a new condenser radiator for my 1989 V12 but it's proving difficult from the usual sources. The part number is CBC8540 but I'm also told that the one for the 6 cylinder cars ( CBC8541) can be made to fit.
Anyone got any ideas?

Try this, David.

http://www.justjagsuk.com/product_detai ... 341/81281/

I got this just by typing the part number into Google. That often works and saves a trawl though complete site lists and catalogues.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Mike. I'll give them a ring in the morning. I have done the Google and ebay search thing and plenty of people list the part but when they go to get one from their usual supplier they come back and say "sorry - can't get that - supplier says out of stock until mid- March"
Anyway, haven't tried this one so will give it a go

Got one! Many thanks to BrakeBuster! Cheers mate!! :D :D
The one that BB had was a CBC8451 which is the 6 cylinder version but it could be made to fit with a little adjustment

Now a few pictures of the car going back together. New receiver fitted and the pipe going to compressor having been adjusted. It is an alloy pipe and relatively easily bent by hand - just have to be careful not to strain the joints or flatten the pipe.
Took the time to strip and repaint the header rail, put a new receiver/dryer in and renewed all the fixings just to tidy everything up.
Just have to tighten everything up now and put the bonnet back on. Next big step is to go and get it vacuum tested. If that's OK I'll also get it pressure tested because sometimes a vacuum will pull a seal in and become gas tight but a pressure will be a more realistic test. If all that checks out then I'll get some gas back in and give it a go! The car has now had a new condenser, compressor, receiver/dryer, hoses and expansion valve over the years - better bloody work now!!

that looks good , and not to difficult to alter the pipework either by the looks

unless already converted, you can use R24 for the gas , its drop in with no requirement to alter any valves etc , the system takes just under 1kg , and I have a 12kg bottle here  should you need it

otherwise its about £100 I think for a system refill...?

It's already converted to the new gas. I've changed practically all of the system so I got valve adapters and an expansion valve calibrated for R134a as I was doing it.
£100 for a recharge is quite steep I think. I have a useful friend so I get "mates rates". Just pay for the gas!
When I was stripping down and repainting the header rail I was thinking that I only did the job recently and telling myself off cos it had deteriorated so quickly. Then I had a think about it and realised that it was probably about 12 years ago! The car has now got to the stage that I'm doing things again. Forth Bridge comes to mind!! :D
Anyway, thanks again to BB who came up trumps on this one! Cheers again mate! :D :D

David,

Great job, well done! Looks good with new components and paint!

You could do a lot worse than use your Jaguar dealer if you trust them. My local dealer did a full aircon service on my XJS which naturally includes evacuation, vacuum testing and recharge. I have pictures and text for a future mag article. Total cost was £79, i think?
