XJ 4.0/XJR/XJR6 Manual

Postby Ceramicolive » Tue Oct 17, 2017 7:56 am

Hello to all,

I'm new to the site but not to Jaguar cars, in the past I have owned a ford era S Type and more recently a series 3 XJ6 and a 4.2 XF.

I'm currently without a Jaguar but I am on the lookout for, as the title suggests, an XJR XJ40 an XJR6 X300 Manual or an XJ 4.0

I understand they are very rare especially the XJ40 variant but I am prepared to wait for the right car.

I have seen the black car on ebay but I feel that it is possibly a bit overpriced especially as I am aware it sold for significantly less in June and has some issues that require attention.

That being said I am new to this particular model so I am open to the wise words and opinions of the experts.

If anyone knows of any coming up for sale please do let me know.

Thanks
Anthony

Hi Anthony. I just replied to your PM. sorry for the delay, as i had log in troubles recently.
There are options out there, but sometimes you have to wait for the right one to come around.
What i would say though its well worth spending the time to view some cars, just to get your eye in. Pictures are very often "deceiving", and should not be used as the sole judge of the car. Good old fashioned viewings are the way to go, as with all old Jaguars.

Of course its depends on how specific you are about condition, price, spec, colour combos etc. All the usual variables?
If you are just looking for the best condition car, that needs the least work, then again that will take some leg work to figure out.
bear in mind the fast majority of X300 and XJ40 will need some kind of work, regardless of what price the owner asks.
will you work on the car yourself? Or will you use garages for any work? This is a key piece of information. If you can do the work yourself, then theres usually no harm to buy a cheaper car that needs work. But if you are paying garages to do all the work, that will likely turn into a false economy. In this case will likely be better off spending more of your budget on a very well looked after example.

I hope that helps.

Hi Naki,

I have just replied to your PM. I will be doing all of the spannering myself however bodywork is something I would have to farm out so body condition would be my first priority I'm not to precious about dings and scratches as I will be using it as much as possible but if it has MAJOR rust issues then the car will have to be cheap to even be considered.

I am more than willing to wait for the right car to come along however long that takes.

Thanks for the reply and PM both have been very helpful

I'll also add colour etc is largely unimportant as there are no colours I particularly dislike.

Likewise mileage is not important to me as long as it has been maintained correctly, in fact I always feel a well used car is better than a low mileage example that has been sat around. Cars do not like to sit unused!

No one really wants a rusty car, so it’s down to how much you can tolerate/ cope with. Besides that, you sound like you are ready for another Jag.

Yes, good point, I should probably clarify I know rust is inevitable on any car from this period (ex series 3 owner  ) If it's cosmetic I'm not that fussed as I have a friend who could sort that relatively inexpensively but I couldn't in all good conscience ask for mates rates for major structural work that's just not cricket old bean! :)

Sorry to 'push-in'. The main rust points on these X300's are the bottom of the front wings, and the apex of the rear arches. I've got an 'ordinary' X300 XJ6 and it's a great car, really strong, and I've done a complete body overhaul without too-much heartache. There are pages on here with my results, I think there was a magazine article as well. Fairly easy stuff, but you'll need to be able to do 'structural-bonding' for the rear-wings. Mine is now a multicoloured (in one colour) car, I'll blow it over next year so it looks the same all-over. Mechanically the cars are easy, typical Xk engine. The front and rear suspension tend to rust and suffer a bit, it would be worth looking at these points. The rear 'A' frame and associated bits in particular. Front drop-links and wishbone components need to be watched.

Thanks Peter, I appreciate the tips and advice, I'll have a look at your car in a moment.

Thread revival! I never got round to buying a manual XJ and now after some family issues I am again on the look out for one.

I did see a 3.2 manual and was supposed to be going to view it today but on reflection It's a little bit too much, needing welding and it's a 3.2. I would prefer at least a 4.0.

So the hunt continues on I guess the longer I wait the more money I can save!
