cruise control

Postby greenie60 » Tue Mar 12, 2019 6:46 am

cruise control doesn't work in my '87' Daimler.
switch operates and red light comes on but no cruise control.
where do I start, I was thinking of looking/replacing the bellows in the throttle lineage area first.
any suggestions please

I think the X300 has the same system as my very late XJS. Mine didn't work and I found the issue to be vacuum dump valve sticking open. Replaced it with a used one and all good

the 'vacuum dump valve', is that the bellows type thing in the throttle linkage, top of the engine mid point left hand side ?

I've attached a picture of the components. The dump valve is item 2 on the diagram.

when for a warm up run today, tried the cruise control at about 70 mph and it worked. turned it on and off again at it still worked but didn't work again after that.
is there a minimum speed it should work out i.e 50/40 mph ?

Hi Greenie60,

I am not clear from your post if you turned off the Cruise Control and then tried to turn it on again or if the Cruise Control turned itself off (if you hit the brakes for example) and you were trying to Resume the Cruise Control or if you were driving faster than the set speed ...Overriding the Cruise Control or perhaps going downhill....There are different responses to each scenario.

Certainly you should be able to set the Cruise Control at 50 or 40.

i purely just tried switching it off then on again which worked twice but when I tried it again about a mile later then it didn't work at all.
I didn't touch the brakes just the switch and it didn't turn itself off

Hi,

In that case I suggest you plug in a diagnostic reader and check for any fault codes.

I find cruise control largely useless in normal driving.
It is nice to know that it works when you have it though.
Have ordered the bulby thing.
