Changing to Splined Hubs

Postby ollyw750 » Sun May 09, 2010 10:15 am

Hi All,

I'm looking to change the wheels on my '66 S Type from steel to wire wheels. I have wheels, one pair of hubs (the other pair reserved with a JEC member) and the spinners.

The manual describes the process of removing hubs, front and rear, but has anyone got any pointers for me - things I need to look out for, etc? I assume that I should replace all the wheel bearings at the same time, but other than that, I'm not expecting to change anything else.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Oliver

Hi Oliver

The fronts are easy, you just need to separate the hub from the disc and off you go. Even better if you fit new discs and pads.

The rears aren't so easy because of the IRS. You will need to press the new hubs on and set the end float using appropriate thickness spacers. You will also need a dummy shaft to prevent the bearing seals and shims from spilling out everywhere. If you have a decent workshop manual it should give full details of what you need to do. If you don't I can give you some pointers from my 420 manual.

Good luck
Stuart
